In Mark 12:30 Jesus makes a statement after one of the scribes asked Him; “Which is the most important commandment of all?” Jesus’ reply: ...”Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” What Jesus basically said was that we need to give everything for this relationship!
Now, what does it mean to give everything to love God. How do you do that? Do we even have the ability to do that?
The keys lie within your free will and faith. God gave you a measure of faith (Romans 12:3) and He gave you free will to choose either the Kingdom of light or the kingdom of darkness (Romans 6:16). When you choose the one, you choose against the other. There is no other option and no middle ground. God is absolute in His ways and not like man that easily compromises to grey or a middle ground. God’s ways are specific and clear and only man confuses the matter of truth.
In John 14:21 Jesus speaks the following words; “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” From these words we see the “how” of loving God. The “what” we find from seeking God and it pleases Him (Hebrews 11:6). Romans 12:2 also helps us to understand “how” we find the will of God. Now the simplistic process can be described as: Use the measure of faith you have received and utilise your free will to choose to submit your will to the will of God that you found by loving Him. The more you grow in this manner, the more you will know and understand God and the more you will love Him. This is a process that can only be fulfilled when you desire God.
As a practical tool, use these steps to help you on this journey. Desiring God is not only a feeling, IT IS A CHOICE!
2 Peter 1:2-4 reveals this incredible truth “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
